Description

Some called it a dinosaur, yet this identification was false. Dimetrodon is not a dinosaur nor does it share any family connection to dinosaurs at all. Instead, Dimetrodon is a type of mammal-like reptile related to modern mammals, despite not looking like much. It's appearance alone is frightening, but at 15 feet long, Dimetrodon angelensis could send chills down a person's spine. It's razor sharp teeth and ambush tactics make it an effective predator of small prey, though it will also scavenge if need be. They can be found thriving mainly on Isla Muerta, along with also thriving on Isla Grande.

Habitat

On Isla Muerta, Dimetrodon is often seen wandering through the valleys during the day when hunting or scavenging. On Isla Grande, they instead thrive near wetlands, swamps and in jungles around rivers, lakes, savannas and badlands.

Behavior

Dimetrodon is mostly seen to be a solitary animal that lives and hunts alone, though occasional group feedings are known to occur when scavenging on carrion. Females with nests become extremely aggressive and will defend their young fiercely from anyone or any animal that ventures too close, including cannibalistic males.

Though it is rarely recorded, Dimetrodon is a capable swimmer and will often enter water to cool itself off during times of intense heat.

Hunting

Dimetrodon is mainly a generalist ambush predator, using the element of surprise to conduct a quick burst of speed over short distances before snagging it's prey in it's jaws. When challenging for carrion, it will simply use it's size and it's massive sail to scare smaller predators off a carcass.

Given it's size, Dimetrodon commonly hunts down small prey. Primary targets consist of Thescelosaurus, Valdosaurus, Hypsilophodon, Leaellynasaura, Dryosaurus, Protoceratops, Leptoceratops, Homalocephale, Pachycephalosaurus, Rhabdodon, Psittacosaurus and Atlascopcosaurus. However, from time to time, Dimetrodon will also target the hadrosaurs Fukuisaurus and Telmatosaurus. On Grande, in addition to still hunting the previously mentioned herbivores, Dimetrodon will also hunt mammals like Moeritherium, Procoptodon, Synthetoceras, Coryphodon and Aepycamelus.

In areas where there's water, Dimetrodon will often subsist on fish and some species of amphibians that thrive there.

Interspecific Competition

On Isla Muerta, Dimetrodon primarily competes for food with the theropods Piatnitzkysaurus and Deinonychus. Up in the valleys, all three predators are seen to coexist. In one on one encounters, Deinonychus will quickly surrender carcasses to a hungry Dimetrodon instead of challenging it, though sometimes it will fight if desperate enough. Piatnitzkysaurus occasionally tries to defend kills against Dimetrodon, though will usually retreat most of the time unless they have young with them. But as of this month, sightings of Piatnitzkysaurus actively fighting Dimetrodon in one on one confrontations have been recorded by observers. One such occurrence involved a lone male aggressively challenging a Dimetrodon that had ventured into it's territory in search of food, resulting in a fight in which both animals were injured, with the theropod suffering nasty bites to it's left leg and right arm while the Dimetrodon was left with a missing eye, bloody wounds on it's side and a chunk of it's sail bitten off, though both had died from their injuries two days later. The pseudosuchian Ornithosuchus can also sometimes be seen confronting Dimetrodon at kills. However, predators such as Ceratosaurus, large Abelisaurs and Postosuchus are avoided at all costs.

On Isla Grande, the main competition of Dimetrodon includes Alectrosaurus, Marshosaurus, Fukuiraptor, Prestosuchus, Sarkastodon, Archaeotherium and Kaprosuchus. Strangely, Dimetrodon is also seen to coexist with the huge lizard Megalania without conflict, with observers unable to figure out why.

And there you have it, Dimetrodon. I still remember that when I first heard of Dimetrodon as a kid, I initially thought that it was a dinosaur. I even had some Dimetrodon toys back then. But after I read up on it a little more, I've now since became accepting of the fact that Dimetrodon is actually a mammal-like reptile ancestor of today's mammals, not dinosaurs.

Eventually I got to learn more about Dimetrodon years later in the documentary Walking With Monsters, where it was shown living alongside and preying on it's herbivorous cousin Edaphosaurus. But later on I learned through further research that Dimetrodon never lived in a hot and dry environment as shown in the documentary, it actually lived around wetlands where there was water and plenty of vegetation. Plus, it didn't just eat other mammal-like reptiles, but also amphibians and fish.

This was the best I could do with Dimetrodon, I did all I could. I chose to use Dimetrodon angelensis since it's the biggest species of all.

And now, without further ado, next profile will feature the carnivore you've all been waiting for.

The wait will finally come to an end as I prepare to introduce the most famous dinosaur of it's time and place: www.youtube.com/watch?v=rE_TUw…

That's right, TYRANNOSAURUS REX!
